Running an organized event offers the participant many things. A chance to improve their performance record (PR), achieve a goal, get a T-shirt, a family fun day, ability to run in remembrance of a loved one, a goal to help shed some pounds, just to name a few. Sometimes the end of a race can be the beginning of a new chapter for an individual – participants and onlookers alike.
Prior to the race starting there is so much energy in the air. It seems it would light a small city sometimes. Everyone seems to be chatting, loosening up, or sizing up the competition. Once the race starts, that energy focuses in the direction of the race. Then, as the participants complete their individual race, the energy begins to wane. Many times, some of the competitors go back before the finish line to encourage others to give it all they have as they approach the finish line. This synergistic exchange of energy through encouragement is palpable, especially when you see the increase in speed or the smile grow on the incoming participants as they complete their own race.
Several years ago at a turkey trot race, we were getting ready to leave when the race announcer asked any of us that were still milling around to stay and cheer on a woman who was bringing up the rear. The announcer said the woman had been involved in a horrific accident and had used this race as part of her rehabilitation plan. The finish line decorations had already been removed. So to simulate the chute to the finish line, we lined up on either side about four deep with a tape across the middle for her to cross. As she came into sight, she was being escorted by her children and her therapist. Every step she took you could tell was a struggle but her resolve to finish was even stronger. We yelled and cheered her home. It was remarkable how happy she and her children were for her to accomplish this monumental goal. Words cannot express what it is like to participate in something so memorable and to think we would have missed it had we not stayed till the end. The positive energy received from that race continues to resonate and makes one wonder what the story is behind every participant who registers for an event.
Have you ever stayed till the last participant has completed the event? You might find it to be the most positive and uplifting experience you ever experience at a race.
